PM Modi in China for SCO Summit: Key Bilateral Talks with Xi Jinping on Agenda
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Tianjin, China on a two-day visit to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit. This marks his first visit to China in seven years.
PM Modi traveled to China after completing a two-day trip to Japan. He received a grand welcome upon his arrival in Tianjin on Saturday morning (August 30). The SCO annual summit will take place on August 31 and September 1.
During his visit, Modi is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday. The discussions are considered significant as India and China look to strengthen ties amid global trade tensions caused by US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies.
The two leaders are expected to review India-China economic relations, address strained ties following the eastern Ladakh border standoff, and explore ways to stabilize bilateral relations. A second possible meeting may take place before the official SCO Summit banquet.
On Monday, before returning to India, Modi is also expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. The meeting comes at a time when Trump’s additional tariffs on Indian goods, due to India’s purchase of Russian crude oil, have strained India-US relations.
Ahead of his trip, PM Modi stressed that India and China must work together to bring stability to the global economic order. In an interview with Japanese daily The Yomiuri Shimbun, he highlighted that stable, predictable, and friendly ties between India and China can positively impact regional and global peace and prosperity.
