Israel Attacks Houthis: Yemeni PM Killed in Airstrikes on Sanaa

According to U.S. media reports, a series of heavy Israeli airstrikes on Yemen’s capital Sanaa killed the Houthi-appointed Prime Minister along with several key cabinet members.

The Houthis stated that Israeli air raids on Saturday (August 30) targeted areas under their control in Sanaa, killing the Prime Minister of their rebel government. They also claimed that Thursday’s Israeli strikes had already killed PM Ahmed al-Rahawi along with several ministers.

The Israeli military confirmed it had launched precision strikes on Houthi militant positions in the Sanaa region. Since the Gaza war began in October 2023, the Houthis have fired dozens of missiles and drones toward Israel, citing solidarity with Palestinians.

In retaliation, Israel has repeatedly targeted ports and infrastructure in Yemen. Recently, Yemeni government forces also thwarted a major Houthi attack in the southern Dhalea province, killing three Houthi militants.

According to Al Jazeera, the Houthis confirmed the death of their Prime Minister in the Israeli strike on Sanaa. The Israeli army stated that on Thursday it carried out air raids against Houthi military bases in the city.

Israel has struck Houthi positions several times in recent months, accusing the group of attacking Israeli and Western ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden under the guise of supporting Palestinians in Gaza.

Health officials reported that Thursday’s airstrike, which came just four days after earlier Israeli raids on Sanaa, killed at least 10 people and injured more than 90. On Sunday, Israeli forces also claimed to have targeted Houthi military installations, including the Presidential Palace in Sanaa.
